Daiko’s Video Widget
I’ve been working on a widget to display Google Video’s of your own choice in the sidebar. The widget is based on Joe’s quotes and displays videos based on the Google Video ID and the Title.
Unlike Google’s own embed-encoding this plugin validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional. I know that the player controls are a bit messy when it is shrinked like this, but for those with broad sidebars, that would not constitute a problem.
Play around with it and tell me what you think!
Installation:
1. Copy daikosvideowidget.php and the daikosvideowidget directory to your /plugin/widgets/ folder
2. Activate the widget on your plugin-page.
3. Drag the Daiko’s Video widget to your sidebar and set a title + width and height (default is 200×170 and the example to the right is 160×150)
To edit the Video-list, open the txt file(s) in the daikosvideowidget directory and edit or add lines in the following format:
GoogleID (tab) Title (linebrake)
Do not add a linebrake after the last line…

I have a problem i cant get it to work.. 2 errors pop up.

Any ideas? i get these errors above the player.
It looks like you forgot to copy the directory also to the widget directory. Try that first!

That directory contains only 2 files
.DS_Store
myvideos.txt
That’s all that was in the archive i downloaded and i am NOT a computer novice saying i “forgot” to install a directory is not funny.
If anything you left a file out of the archive.
Sorry I didn’t mean to imply that. The php error suggests that the dir is missing. I’ll take a look at it when I get home. These replies were made on my cell phone.
The directory is there and the syntax is correct for the location. I did check this from the php file before i posted the question here.
I did think the error was the myvideos.txt so i made my own but still the same error.
Your directory contains two files Sir:
myvideos.txt and .DS_Store
then, there is a file named daikosvidewidget.php (+ readme_dvw.txt)
I’ve uploaded the php file and the directory into my /plugin/widgets/ folder
The player is OK but the screen is on black: no video. Why?

Why don’t you try now… It seemed to have something with the encoding of the .txt file to do. It has to be UTF-8 txt.
You can add multiple txt files to the daikosvideowidget directory. Maybe an idea would be to make various collections!?

I recognize that the widget may not be fully in compliance with Google Video. If people want a non XHTML version based on the embed coding from Google, I can make that as a separate download….

One more thing! I noticed that the new txt file is best edited in Wordpad not Notepad. Don’t ask me why, but it seemed like Notepad for some reason added an extra linebrake which causes every second video to be blank….
Uploaded the new txt file, (it is different to the first) but i still have the error.
I suggest you update the php-file too!
done that as well, deleted the old one and uploaded the new one. Made a new text file with the name list.txt in wordpad as well. Deactivated it and reactivated it still the same.
Sorry, out of ideas, at least now… I repacked the thing and uploaded the new package to http://www.googlebetas.com and it works just like that.

I don’t think that part of the code should be different…
Maybe you also could test adding a / after the dir declarations in the php. My problem now is that I’m unable to replicate your error…
I have joes quotes and it works fine, have tried adding the ” / ” makes no difference.
It cant find the txt file.. well thats what i think but i dont understand php.

How about shortening the dir name?
The last idea is to check the chmod settings.

The widget is out in version 1.1 and 1.2 Beta. They don’t need the text-file and the above problem is solved. In addition you get YouTube and even MySpace support.
Well, with version 1.1 also YouTube is included, now this is the perfect widget

The widget works some of the time. Many times when you go to the site, you only see a blank area where the video should be. If you refresh or click around, eventually it will pop on. Any ideas?

Is there any way to tell the plugin that the ID is from a particular site? It is currently taking one of my Google IDs and assuming it’s a Myspace ID, hence the video is not showing.

I tried installing this and so far, all appears to be working “internally”, but NOTHING is showing up externally on the site itself!
Any ideas what I can do here? I’d love to have the RAW code and just open the sidebar and insert it exactly where I want the videos to show up, assuming that whenver I made changes within the plugin “internally”, they are reflected directly on the site’s sidebar itself.
Any ideas what the widget code is to paste this widget manually in the sidebar?

couple of questions:
can i display multiple videos at the same time? i’ve tried. I have 3 video ID’s in place, only one is displayed on the page.
