I’ve updated the Daiko’s YouTube Widget with support for “Post in Category(-ies)” conditional testing. That means that you will be able to specify that the widget will only display on certain posts belonging to certain category (or categories). The widget will also display on the respective Category archive pages.
Please enjoy and report any problems with it. Since this widget actually includes two widgets (the videoplayer also), make sure you test the flexibility of being able to change the way you display the video’s from the various YouTube widgets you have running.

I’ve been trying hard to find a good CSS solution to the play button issue in IE with limited luck. That is why I’ve now decided to provide you all with an update that will work on all plattforms (I guess). I’ve decided to put the video thumbnail in as a background image and use a transparent gif play button on top. The only problem with this solution is that you loose control over the size of the background image, thus just get a cropped view of the thumbnail when using the small and medium size thumbnails.
The other update is that I’ve made sure that the widget doesn’t display any before and after widget code on pages you don’t show the widget using conditional tags. It still displays comment code to assist users in debugging.
Tell me what you think and if you css freaks out there have a better solution, give me a shout.

I have brushed up Daiko’s YouTube Widget with a couple of small, but important, fixes.
- It now produces valid XHTML code - Sorry for not doing that right away
- It will now also show the video if you only insert 1 single video - I didn’t even know that until I got noticed by one of my users since it was always meant to show many.
So go grab your very own copy of the widget and have fun!

I just wanted to let you know that Daiko’s YouTube Widget just reached 1000 downloads after it’s first month in the public domain. You can follow the download development at Wordpress.org. You can of course also download it there. And don’t worry I keep the same versions here if you’ve downloadet it at daikos.net.
Enjoy the widget and keep those bug reports and feature requests coming.

I learned that the widget didn’t play well with installations where wordpress was installed in a different folder than the home page. I tried to fix that and thought I had solved it in version 1.1.10. Well that wasn’t exactly true. Now it should be alright though. Give version 1.1.11 a spin instead. Go download the latest version of Daiko’s YouTube Widget here.

I’ve just updated Daiko’s YouTube Widget with a fix to address the ever returning conflict between plugins/themes/widgets using prototype.js and mine that uses jquery.js. In addition I’ve used WPs built in script loader to prevent jquery.js being loaded more than once. This means that the widget is only compatible with WP 2.1+ so make sure to upgrade your Wordpress installation at the same time.
Enjoy!

After a hectic couple of days since launch of Daiko’s YouTube Widget I’ve already reached version 1.1.
I’ve now added support for YouTube RSS-feeds namely tag and user specific feeds. This was a request from one of the early adopters, Myke over at Myke Amend and since Wordpress has a built in MagPie RSS parser, it was relatively easy to implement.
With too many stable releases over the last couple of days (maybe I don’t understand how to best use SVN yet) I promise to calm down in my development eager.
Use it and abuse it and keep those comments coming so I can improve the widget to everyones benefit.

I must appologize to all of you for the broken download links to my new widget. Well the fact is that all download links were broken. I moved to a new server and there was a change in path that was not corrected. Thank you Rich for notifying me.

Better luck this time. Go get it here: Daiko’s YouTube Widget

As some of you may have noticed, I’ve added a sidebar widget that displays YouTube Videos as images. This is “Work in progress” and will in a not too distant future result in a YouTube Widget. It will have a twist since it displays images and not videos in the sidebar. Thanks to YouTube and their use of the video ID also as an image ID it is relatively easy to make a widget displaying the videos in the way shown to your right.
I’m also considering to include a plugin for this one that allows the users to publish videos from YouTube in their post with an option to only post the image and keep the actual video as a popup. Any thoughts on that?
The functionality increases of course when using ThickBox and swfObjects so thank you Cody Lindlay and Geoff Stearns for that.
Comment here if you want to influence on this project and stay tuned.
