  6. Have fun

Instructions

Most of the features are self-explanatory to the experienced user of widgets. Daiko’s Video Widget is at the outset also easy to configure. Actually it works without any options specified (the problem is that you will have to settle with my list of videos and a standard size of 200×180 pixels).

Screen shot of widget-control panel

Title: Add the title of the widget.

Width: Specify the width in pixels. Default is 200. If Height is specified it is automatically calculated in accordance with the Format.
Height: Specify the height in pixels. Default is relative to the width of 200. If Width is specified it is automatically calculated in accordance with the Format.
Format: Indicates the main format of the videos. Assists in the automatic calculations of with and height respectively.

Note that in the example from the screen shot above, only width is specified. The height is calculated accordingly.

Videos: Add your videolist in the following format [MySpace, Google or YouTube ID]@[Title]@[Link] separated with new line between the videos. [Title] and [Link] are optional values. If Title is added it automatically links to the video on MySpace, Google Video and YouTube respectively. If in addition [Link] is added, the new link replaces the auto-link to the video sites. NEW in version 2.02: Put an * in front of your video ID to indicate that one particular video is in the 16:9 Widescreen format. This will override the Format setting.

Note in the example above that the various options can be mixed and that the only value needed is the video ID. Remember also that Google Video IDs may start with “-”.

Display only on: Specify whether the widget shall be displayed on all or just some part(s) of your blog. The drop down list gives you the options. On Post(s), Page(s) and Category you can limit it further by specifying the specific ID, slug or title of the post, page or category you want to show it on. The Home choice indicates that it will only be displayed on your home-page.
Slug/Title/ID: See above. To learn more about so called Conditional Tags. Read more here….

Use Google Simple Player: Check this box if you want to use the Google Video Player in Simple Mode. Good for narrow sidebars typically under 200px wide.

Have fun!

  1. Dear users! I’m travelling so I’m not able to make the bug fix to remedy the error Dean points out in a posting earlier. But you can do it yourself by changing the check made in line 97. Change the number 18 in that line to 17. Hopefully that will fix it!

    Daiko

  2. The above bug-fix is now implemented in the downloadable version named v. 2.01. Enjoy!

Hi, i installed the plugin and activated it but cant find the control panel shown in the image above, can you provide me with any help

  4. 4Watchdog

What is the ID for YouTube videos?

    Here is an example URL
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9QNb0OZshg&mode=related&search=

What code should I put into the widget?

    Thanks

  5. To Lee:

You will find the control panel on your widgets page (sub-menu of Presentation) and on the widgets with options you will have a button visible when placed in the sidebar column. Push that and you will get the widget control panel.

    To Watchdog:

The YouTube ID in that link is everything between = and & that is: M9QNb0OZshg

    Have fun!

  6. Hi, I tried to remove the default videos and it broke your widget. So I just pasted my vids over your default videos and that seems to be working fine. The 200 default size doesn’t fit my theme so I changed it to 180. This breaks the Google Video player. So,now I’m just using Youtube which is fine. It works. I love this widget.

  7. Hi TechTweaker,

I’m not sure that I understand your problem. The widget is programmed to use the widget control panel and not edit the code (I understand that you have made changes to the code, which is fine under GPL license). All the changes you mention are of course possible to change in the control panel. Adding your own videos will not include the default videos in the code. It will replace the defaults.

Adjusting width similarly will override the default.

Anyway I’m glad you like the widget!

  8. I badly need this bar for my video-portfolio…
I mean, I wanna rewamp my website switching to wordpress, since seems lighter and will let me blog in an easier way.

    But I have some problems..
    Look at this:http//kurage-art.biz/wordpress/
All’I get to see is a white bar sayng loading…
Do you think it is a matther of theme??

hi i’m very interested to use this plug. but i don’t have widget in my wordpress theme.

actually i’have created a video category where i’ve posted some videos there. i would like to display those videos in my sidebar.

is it still possible for me to use the plug in

  10. Hi Dakwah,

This is so far only available as a widget. I’m not even sure if I will do a plugin version with the same functionality. That said, my experience is that it is easier to through in widget support in a theme than rewrite the widget to a plugin. So if you need help with that, we can have a go at it.

  11. 11Woody

Hello Daiko, I was wondering if you have any plans to allow a video playlist on the sidebar widget. I am using your widget now and it is great! I’d love the ability to multiple text links and one video screen.

    Exelente widget men!

  13. Hi Daiko, this is a really cool widget! thanx, it works perfect. One minor problem I experienced using your widget but I don’t know if it’s something I’m doing wrong. I want the video title link to be redirected to a page on my wordpress blog. When I enter de url after the second @, and save it, the video won’t show up. am I doing something wrong? (maybe the use of “?” or “_” in my link)

  14. Hi Woody,

Could you please elaborate a bit on your proposal?

    Daiko

  15. Hello cmyk,

It is a bit hard for me to tell what is happening since I haven’t seen the link. Could you send it to me, or post it here?

    Daiko

  16. Hello Daiko, I probably was to fast with my comment. Now the link within the wordpress blog works well. I think it was because of the buffering time in googlevideo that was causing a stop in displaying the video. Thanx!

  17. 17Trilok Acharya

I was wondering how you could sort the videos according to date. It would difintely be a helpful feature to add if it’s not present.

  18. Hi Trilok,

I guess your comment goes to http://www.daikos.net/daikos-google-videobar/ and the search results.

The answer is no on that widget. The sorting options through the Google AJAX search API are limited to relevance. I’ve been working on a concept of using RSS-feeds instead of the search API, but I’m not there yet. That would be sortable on date and an alternative to using the search API. Keep on coming back….

  19. Hello!

When I installed the widget I get this error message

Warning: Missing argument 1 for widget_videos_control() in /********/***/**/wp-content/plugins/widgets/daikosvideowidget.php on line 19

    Thank you for your help.

  20. Hi Alexander,

I’ll write in english allthough I know you speak scandinavian.

I think you’ll be fine if you scroll down on the widgets page and hit save next to where you specify the number of Video Widgets you want.

Test that and I’ll have a go at correcting that. Good Luck!

Hi, i installed the plugin and activated it but cant find the control panel shown in the image above, can you provide me with any help

I can’t find a widget page? What do I need to do?

  22. I love your plug in, but my current theme does not play well with widgets, what piece of code do I need to stick between my sidebar divs to pull up your random videos? I can get it to pull one video, but not at random. Could you lend me a hand and let me know which portion of the code I need to copy?

  23. Hi Robert,

I’ve been considering a plugin for a while, but haven’t come around to make it. I’m affraid it is a bit more complicated than just copying parts of the code. What exactly is the problem with the widgets in your theme? Solving that would probably be easier.

  24. I would be so happy if this widget could display local video files off my server instead of youtube, google, etc.

is there any way I can do that?

    thanks!

  25. Great plugin, working great. For some reason, though, I can only get mine to display one video at a time. Any clues? Thanks!

  26. Hi Daiko,

i’m using a wordpress video plugin to include videos in posts with the following code: [youtube id].
Is there any possibility to show the latest posted video automatically in your sidebar widget?

    Thanks for the cool plugin.

  27. 27ovizii

    hello,

I really like your plugin but I need something a little bit different. I need to show video, mostly locally not from youtube or other external services inside my sidebar…
maybe having them link to certain posts?
    doesn’t really matter,…

do you know of another plugin I could use to show a small video in the sidebar or several? either clickable to play or clickable to open a post containing the latest video?

or maybe something like a photogallery for videos?

I’d love to hear from you, any suggestion is welcome.

  28. 28Wayne

Great widget…however it stops playing after a couple seconds. I wait for the whole video to load, and it still stays stopped. Is there an adjustment I need to make? Thaks again!

  29. 29Wayne

Got the timing problem figured out…a simple reboot. NOW I need to adjust the width of the NAME OF VIDEO…if its too many characters to wraps around to the next line. Is there anyway to adjust this?

  30. 30francesco

i clic on the small button but anything happens and i can’ configure the widget :S

  31. 31Number 01

You need to add the option for a break between the title and the video itself, it is all blended on my page and looks bad.

  32. 32Dan

    Hi Daiko,
Great widget. Am really looking forward to using this.

I’m having a problem getting multiple videos to display, however. I’ve tried a space between entries in the list and also carriage returns. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any tips?
    Thanks,
    Dan

  33. 33Dominique

Great widget! How do I get more than one instance of the widget to play on my blog? I want to have several videos for the reader to choose from.

This has to be my favorite plugin for Wordpress. Simple yet elegant in its design. I have no complaints whatsoever.

However, I have a request. Lately, I’ve been watching more and more videos from this site (http://www.gamevideos.com/) and would like to include them as well with the other videos. Any chance this could be added to existing code or as a similar yet separate plugin?

Thank you for your excellent coding skills and vision.

  39. Aweome widget… Question: How do I get more than one video to display? I have a list but it only shows one at a time. It rotates through the list on refresh but can I have them lined up beneath each other in the sidebar?

  40. When I try to add other video widgets from the widget control panel and hit save, I get an error message:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: widget_text_register() in /home/iphoneta/public_html/wp-content/plugins/dvw_2_05/daikosvideowidget.php on line 274

    What is that about?

  41. Will you support additional video sharing sites such as Metacafe?

  42. I’ve installed this on other blogs and it works fine… but on my iphonetattler.com word press blog (version 2.2)… when I try to add other video widgets I get:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: widget_text_register() in /home/iphoneta/public_html/wp-content/plugins/dvw_2_05/daikosvideowidget.php on line 274

Been waiting for an answer :-) Help!

Is it possible to use this with Vimeo?

If not, could you update it so it would take Vimeo videos?

  44. 44bondurant

Hello, I have tried to install your nice widget to upload a video from YouTube, but it doesn’t work.
    I have used it here:

    to upload this video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1EdY1t8mbw
    With these data:
    Title > Our videos
    Width, Height > empty
    format 4:3
    Videos: [YouTube g1EdY1t8mbw]
    Display: All
    ID: empty

But the “call”of my browser just freezes looking for video.google instead than YouTube..

    Thanks for any help ciao!

I saved it in the widgets folder und activated in in my plugins menu.
It is also Displayed on the Widgets Menu and i can move it into my sidebar, but i can t get trough to the options menu it simply doesn t open at all like its shown on your screenshot above, but i don t know why, i already tried it in ie 6 and firefox 2.

  51. I was wondering how several pages or post get written in to the widget. Do I separate each ID with a space, or comma?
    Thanks

  52. I love this plugin when everything seems to be working. However, I’ve had two issues:
    1) I can’t seem to get multiple videos to display on one instance of the plugin (I play with spaces and various characters). No luck. So, when I need, I run multiple instances of the plug-in, each displaying one video. Which seems to exacerbate problem #2
    2) Especially for users outside of the United States, having video(s) on my sidebar does seem to increase load times. Again, this only seems to be a problem for users outside of the U.S. I’m displaying YouTube videos only.

    my site, for example: http://www.uncorneredmarket.com/

    Thanks,
    Dan

  56. I have an idea for you. It’s a good idea, I think, and since I don’t have the time or expertise to do it you may as well. If you could make a video widget for the desktop, that would be cool. A sort of RSS feed of the latest videos on the net, and that you can play straight off the desktop. That would actually be pretty cool. I fact, that’s what I thought this was when I saw the site name, but it obviously didn’t turn out to be that. At any rate, I think it’s a pretty cool idea.

  58. It is possible to make the default volume as loud as possible? The default is just below minimum, now. Thanks for any way to fix this…

  59. Hi packfill,

I don’t think the volume is controlable through the code. I just tested your website (http://www.theseattlespecialist.com/) and the volume is maximum when I play the video. It might have something to do with the level you had when you last visited YouTube. I tried to mute the sound, exit from your page, and then return. The result was that the sound was muted. So regard this as a YouTube feature, not a bug.

  60. Hi,

As soon as i removed the default videos the widget stopped working, i’ve tried everything but now the widget only displays a blank box.
tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no luck.

    any suggestions?

  61. Hi–I have entered about six videos I can’t get the videos to alternate beyond the first two—wussup?

    id#@title@url

Does the title have to exactly match the one given on Youtube?

    Thanks. Great job!

  62. Hi Ernie,

No, the title is totally independent of the YouTube title. You might have a syntax error.

Can you post your videolist? or maybe send it to me? rune[at]daikos.net

  63. Great! Fabulous! Superb piece of work on this widget, Daiko!

Thank you for taking the time and energy to create it. Works like a charm with/for all my 8-10 Google Videos!

    Thanks again for your creativity.

I am having trouble getting more than one video to go on m sidebar. Any suggestions?

  65. 65Coach30

I love the video widget! It’s exactly what I am looking for. Does anyone know if there is a way to modify the widget so that it will autoplay youtube videos?

    Thanks!

  66. Hi Coach30,

To make the YouTube videos autoplay you can do the following in line 146 that in v2.07 reads as follows:

    $mediavalue = implode('',array($murl,$pieces[0]));

    To the following:

    $mediavalue = implode('',array($murl,$pieces[0],’&autoplay=1′));

    Good Luck!

  67. 67Coach30

I’ve got the plugin working and it autoplays, thanks! I have two more issues, then I’m ready to launch the website.

    1. Intermittently, almost randomly, the movie will not load. You should be able to replicate this by refreshing your browser numerous times. For the life of me I can’t figure out what is causing this. It seems the player will load, but no movie.

    2. Is there an easy way to bypass the active X issues with the IE browsers?

    Here is my staging site:

Thanks for all of your help!

  68. Hi Coach30,

    1. This is probably because you have an ending empty line somewhere in the list of videos. Be sure to check if you accidentally added an ekstra line brake after the last video. (I’m going to fix that so it checks that automatically)

    2. Can’t help you on the active X thing in IE. I’m a sworn Mac user and don’t have immediate access to a Windows machine. My guess is that the active X settings are supposed to be controlled by the user only so a web-site is not able to bypass that.

Love your site by the way!

  69. 69dheru

    Hi Daiko,

Thank you for providing this great widget. Is there any way to play flv videos on my server instead of youtube/google/etc videos?

  70. Hi dheru,

Sorry, but I haven’t added that requested feature. May include it in a not too distant future though.

  71. 71dheru

You’re still the man (or woman as the case may be) in my book!

  72. 72Matt B

Love this widget! I’ve just installed a three-column theme and the video widget is too big. Is there an easy way to resize it? Here is the site: http://www.motivationalreview.com

    Thanks!

  73. 73Matt B

Oops, I put up my wrong URL, it’s http://www.motivationalreview.net

Is there an easy way to resize the player to fit in the sidebar?

    Thanks again!

  74. Hi Matt,

Specify width in the widget control panel. Don’t specify height if you don’t know the exact height, that is leave it empty.

I guess 180 is fine. Default is 200.

    Hope that helps…

  81. Daiko,

Thanks for the time spent creating this little marvel. Do you know how I can put a picture on the
different video selection buttons. I defined five youtube videos that show under the 200×200 video widget
they all work perfect but they show up as an empty
box with a small play arrow in them. I thought they
might have a little micro pic of the video, but they are empty. Here is where you can see what I mean.
    http://www.qualitycage.net/wordpress
    Thanks again though, Great tool.
    Scott.

  82. Hi Scott,

It seems that you have used a bit more than the Video ID in your video-list. You have for example:

    OPz2MYp67ic&hl=en/

    Instead of just:

    OPz2MYp67ic

Remove the extra info from your video-IDs and you’ll be fine! The small video pictures will appear automagically.

    Good luck!

  83. First, love the plugin. Just moved web boxes and installed the updated WAMP with PHP5 and MySQL. When I try to pull up the widget and look at the text I get this.

  84. This is really cool. I have lots of videos uploaded at YouTube. I wanted to transfer them to my WP blog but I can’t do it. Thanks to this tool. This will really eat much of my blogging time always.

    Love the Widget
Since I am using it in a sidebar is there a way when you click on it that it can open into a larger screen?

    Thanks in advance :)

  86. This is an amazing widget and really love it.

You may want to add the following codes:

wmode=”transparent” (in the object tag) and
    (in between the object tags)

so that the widget will not float above other flash object.

  87. I noticed a double “<<” at line 141.

    <<param name=”Align” value=”"

    Is that a typo error?

  88. 88Alan

Thank you for a widget, it’s a great tool. I would like to be able to specify which video clip should play first, rather than have the widget pick one randomly from the list. The reason for this is that I use video clips as part of the news, not the random entertainment… but I don’t know if Daiko’s Video Widget can be ‘programed’ to allow the order of the videos played, or at least the first video to be ‘on top’ of the others (until another one is specified as the ‘first’).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for the great tool again!

  89. Cool Widget, I use to show it in the middle of my home page using widget_videos(), but now with WP 2.6.2 I get an error “Warning: Missing argument 1 for widget_videos(), called in /home/poli…/public_html/wp-content/themes/Zeke10/home.php on line 87 and defined in /home/polipopt/public_html/wp-content/plugins/daikos-video-widget/daikosvideowidget.php on line 81

How can i use it again without enable it into the sidebar?

  90. I finally got more than one YouTube video to rotate as the site refreshes by placing this in the widget:

    [YouTube ID]@[Title]

    [YouTube ID]@[Title]

Mine works great this way. Love the plugin, one of my favorites.

    Will this work for schooltube.com?

  93. thank you

  94. Awsome..

But i’m sorry i’m still confuse about the configuration. where can i get the ID [Yoyutube, Google, etc] also where can i know the title ? is it from video title of Youtube for example that placed above the screen ? Last question, is the link from the URL or what ? it’s nice if you explain it with some pictures if you don’t mind …

Thanks so much, im waiting 4 ur answer.

According to the instructions: 3. Drag the Daiko’s Video widget to your sidebar and set a title width and height (default is 200×170 and the example to the right is 160×150)

However I don’t understand how you are supposed to drag a widget to the sidebar. As the admin, I can activate the widget, but then what steps do I need to do exactly to “drag” the widget?

  96. 96Jody

Well apparently WordPress has changed the way you install widgets in the sidebar. I found out how to do that. However in the widget box when I insert the “embed” code and click “Done”, nothing appears on the site, just the title.

Can anybody figure out if I am doing this right?

Love this widget! But can’t seem to get it to work. Trying to pull from youtube. Here’s what I have in the widget in addition to title, width 300 and format 4:3.
[VXDFJSMVdPM]@[E TRADE Baby Outtakes Superbowl 2009]

Here’s what shows on my site
    Random Video

    Any ideas?

hi guys, I am trying to install a tool that you have on the home page (12 videos, each opens in new window), can you please tell me how to configure the widget in order to get that effect.

(now it shows only one video at a time and it opens in the same window)

    Thanks a lot
